SESSION Details

Analytics at scale with Power BI and Azure Synapse

To really understand what this session is about, I want you to get to know these 2 personas!

» Meet Marc: over the years he has developed a self-service Power BI solution that is now being used by dozens of people! But his solution is in trouble... The business is asking him to load data from various APIs. And, they want him to store historical data in Power BI for trend analysis! ... How can he do this?

» Meet Dave: his data lakehouse solution in Azure Synapse Analytics is vital for multiple decision making processes. But his solution is in trouble... the Power BI reports on top of it can't seem to handle the volume of data, and at the same time the business is asking for near real-time data! ... What can he do?

Marc & Dave need to work together and combine their expertise to solve their challenges! Interested in the end result? Then you are the right audience for this session, come join us!

We will train you how to design and build a solution that will span both Power BI and Azure Synapse Analytics. We will help you to get the best out of both worlds, sharing our learnings and best-practices along the way in a demo-rich day.

After the training you will be able to:
• Better design and implement complex data models, including hybrid tables, aggregations, and combined storage modes (import, DirectQuery, dual).
• Orchestrate the end-to-end data processing, with a pipeline chain from data ingest in the data lakehouse to the incremental Power BI dataset refresh.
• Use different techniques to identify performance bottlenecks in your solutions and how to solve those ("does it fold"?).
• Implement a cost-efficient solution, that still meets the scalability demands.

Q&As

Short Description
- Learn how to design and build a truly scalable solution that spans both Power BI and Azure Synapse Analytics
Should delegates bring a laptop with them?
- Not necessary. It will be 90% demonstrations, some slides for architecture drawings, and interaction with the attendees.
If so what Spec?
- n/a
What software and licences do they need?
- n/a
What is the structure of the day?
- We will start the day with the personas from the session description (Marc and Dave), and a list of challenges they encounter. We will ask the attendees to extend the list - preferably from their day-to-day life - so we can do our best to embed those during the training as well; like the real consultants we are =). We will of course introduce ourselves, and explain how it helps us in real-life to combine our expertise to solve the challenges we phase. Marc has more depth and practical experience regarding Power BI, and Dave has more depth and practical experience regarding Synapse (and Databricks). From there we take it forward and dive into the challenges. We continuously guide them with design considerations and options, talking about the pros and cons, and the drivers for decisions to be made. Ensuring that the attendees feel comfortable to consider these features in their own solution architectures later on.
What internet requirements do the delegates have?
- n/a
What will the delegates get out of the day?
- They will able to apply the learnings of the training to their own solutions, for challenges of today and in the future. They now understand how to combine the advanced modelling and orchestration capabilities of Power BI with a powerful data lakehouse in Synapse Analytics, and especially: how to daisy-chain the data flow together. //And, from the session description: After the training they will be able to: • Better design and implement complex data models, including hybrid tables, aggregations, and combined storage modes (import, DirectQuery, dual).
